Any one used or using Total Seal Rings in our engines?

Wondering what kind of results you're getting.

Thanks,
Marc

Total seal rings are fine, as long as they're not the gapless rings. You don't want gapless rings.

Gapless was the plan, why not run them?

The gases that get past the top ring have no where to go. The gapless second shows a less static leakage, however, dynamic leakage is much worse with a gapless second. When the gases get between the rings it will lift the top ring causing flutter. Dyno tests show decreases in power with gapless rings.

There was a post on this before. Search for it. From what I remember the gapless were good for big motors ie v-8 but not 4 cyl turbo.

One of my friends ran the gapless in his DSM and it totally f*ed up his compression. That's my only experience with them but it's enough to make me not use them"thumbs up

Thats were your wrong. I have numerous articles on the effects of blowby and using gapless rings, one mag even tested an engine using reg rings, dynoed then installed gapless, probably 15% increase in power. Gapless rings make more power, period. Your compression is higher, your oil stays cleaner blah blah blah.

Turbo motors might be a different story but then phone the manufacterers, there the ones who would know! "thumbs up

Heres a link to Total Seal website!

http://www.totalseal.com/howdoo.html

Another link about ring flutter!

http://www.totalseal.com/pg9.pdf

They are using these rings at the import drags, one of the top runners is running 34+ LBS of boost. I found the part # for a 2.5L, #6024. Will find out how much they are tomorrow. I wouldn't mind using them as I have to get my block fixed anyways,

When I first put my 2.2 together for my white GTC, I used Total Seal's rings. The motor sucked oil like there was no tomorrow. Leakdown testing showed less than 2%. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and ran the motor for 8,000 miles before tearing it down and putting Sealed Power rings in it. Same leakdown, no oil consumption. The oil control ring selected was the SS low tension style. I was using over a quart of oil every 800 miles. The folks at Total Seal were at a loss as to why. They tried to tell me an improper bore finish was the culprit from the start. My machinist is too sharp to make that mistake. In my humble opinion, I'd make a different choice.

There are 2 things that come to mind here, I occasionally pit crew for the owners of Total Seal (TS) on their Sprint Car. I have first hand experience, luckily it was someone elses engine and pocketbook. They selected the gapless rings and had the block machined without discussing the surface finish required for the gapless rings, smoke and high oil consumption was the result. After a few tries we got the rings to seat and got rid of the oil consumption. The culprit here wasn't the surface finish (ok maybe 10% of the cause) the main problem was running a richer than stock fuel mixture for break-in. By doing this the oil is washed from the cylinder walls and causes the rings to burnish the cylinder walls, which gives you a glazed cylinder and therefore no or little sealing. Talking to TS at the track, they said to run a stock mixture or even a little lean until the rings seat, then add fuel and turn up the boost.

All I have ever run in all of my turbo engines "total seal" - I have never had a problem with them , in fact i don't care for standard rings they smoke and use oil- Glenn
