I'm not real familar with these vehicles. The regulator is on the fuel rail somewhere. Typically the only things that are powerfull enough to make it blow black smoke(as far as sensors) are: ECT, MAP, MAF(your doesn't have one) and an O2. A vacuum leak will do it but has to be pretty bad and at that point they are easy to find or hear(usually). If the fuel pressure regulator is bad it will cause this also. Sometimes you can smack the regulator with a wrench while observing the fuel pressure(if the regulator is bad or intermittantly bad) and watch the pressure go from normal to max pressure. The O2 only reads what it sees. If your blowing black smoke and the O2 reads lean, then the O2 is bad(wish they were all that easy). However, if your blowing smoke and the O2 reads rich, chances are the O2 is ok, it is just reporting what it is seeing. A bad injector can cause problems also. Check your plugs, are they all black? That will tell you if this rich condition is affecting all cylinders or just one. Obviously it can't run perfect but does it run ok, doesn't die or whatever?

You originally said black smoke, is it black or blue? Because there is a big difference.

Kyle, I have a DAM* good idea! Buy urself a manual, and try and figure it out on ur own, when you cant, ask here. I dont remember it smoking, atleast when I saw it the day before you came and picked it up.....I dont think it has to do at all with the topend (rings piston etc.). Do this. Turn ur key to the *ON* position, then off, then on, then off, then on (3 times) The power loss or some light will start blinking codes. beep beep(pause) beep beep is a 22. A 55 is end or beginning of codes I believe. Lemme know what the codes are, I have a book telling, u can get the codes on www.allpar.com or buy urself a manual, which is what you need to do. The codes will tell ya if there is a map sensor problem, if ur o2 sensor is shot or if any vacuum lines are leaking, etc etc....

Good luck

Dusty
