today I got my engine all apart today and I found what i suspected was the culprit of the knocking. #3 rod bearing is pooched. I did not remove the crank/rods/pistons because I don't know if I want to be the one to do that. BUT what i want to know is will I be able to keep the rings that are on my pistons if the pistons get taken out of the cylinders? I've never done this before so I don't know. The car had good even compression and zero blowby before I took it apart and I don't want to mess with something if it's not broken. I have heard to many stories about not breaking in an engine correctly and the rings not seating for me to readily put new rings on.

any advise on the situation is gretaly appreciated. thanks.

you shoulden't have to change rings but depending on how long your rod bearing was junk, if your crank is scratched replacing it with a new bearing will only be a bandaid. 10 miles 10,000 miles who knows. also you need to make sure all debris from bearing is out of engine change oil after you get it all back together after 10-20 min. my 1 rod bearing cost me a rebuild all my main bearings were scratched. i had to get crank cut. could here metal stuck in turbo. disassembled it washed with w-d40 all is well now faster than ever

oh I'm going to fix it proper if it needs to be done. I think I caught it early enough that there won't be any scoring on the crank. if the crank is fine I'll just have the main and rod bearings replaced, but if it needs to be turned then so be it. all engine parts will be thouroughly inspected upon reassembly and cleaned extensively.

I'm thinking of bringing the block to a machine shop and have them install and reassemble the crank/rods/pistons. I just feel paranoid they'd say the crank needs to be turned if it doesn't. easy way to make more money and it's not like I would know. hmm?

i recently had to change pistons and rod bearings, the crank looked fine so i just bought regular bearings an put everything back together but i guess the crank wasn't good because now i am geting it machined along with the rods

so just cause it looks good doesn't mean it is mesure it first and that might save you from putting i together and having to take it all apart again because the bearings failed because of the crank being bad.

just saying this because it happened to me

Yeah, you can reuse the rings, just make sure they go back in the same bore, have done it before and works fine!
