Yup. I just did it this spring. I think the angle is 45%. You need a pretty long bit and get another person to help you. One person positions the drill at a 45% angle and the other one watches from the other side to make sure you drill straight. Use an old headgasket for reference point to get started. Use a nice sharp drill bit, take your time as there is a bit of a hole to drill. You will need to use all the bit, I actually had to undue the bit and pull it out of the drill some more as I was running out of drill bit. Have fun.

Only if you want it cross drilled!!

I have drilled a coulpe of blocks straight down but can't say if there was any difference. I never had any adverse effects so I would say it's safe to do. Cross drilling is very delicate work. A friend tried it on a spare block and hit a cylinder three times!!
Needless to say ,we don't call him Cool Hand Luke any more.

Thanks
Randy

Was he wearing his contacts or glasses? Like I said you do it on a 45 degree angle with another person watching to make sure you're straight. Once you get started and get the bit in about a cm or so it's smooth sailing. Use another person to help you. I drilled my block no problem. Good luck.
