Hey guys, just a quick rebuild question..
Need to do somethin bout my engine as a temporary fix until I get my hands on a new motor...
Need to replace the rings, and the rod/main bearings. Can this ALL be done by pullin the pan & goin in underneath, or am I gonna have to pull the head to do the rings? If so, screw it I'll just let it sit until I get a new motor.. but I'd like to at least be able to drive it off & on until then, so I just need to know how much work I'm lookin at for a temporary fix. Thanks.

While I've not rebuilt a 4 cyl mopar, all of the other engines that I have
done required removing the head(s) to get the pistons out. I would expect that the little mopars are the same.

If it were possable to get them out the bottom, you would first have to
remove the crank, which would require removing the transmission, and
so on. It is simplest to pull the head and then the block, do the work
and put everything back.

Good luck.

Head needs to be pulled to pull the rods/pistons out. You will also have to remove the crank to get at the main bearings which means you have to seperate the engine from the tranny and remove the flexplate or flywheel in order to get the crank out. With all that work I'd say find another motor to build in the mean time or wait until you can just pull your motor out of your car and do it right.

Okay, that's what I thought... thanks guys. Well, I wanted to upgrade to a T1 or higher eventually anyway (just bought this thing a month ago).. so I guess I'll just step up my search for a new motor..

Pulling the head off to do the rings will probably add an hour to your job.

It's really not as bad as you may think.

You have to pull the head off to replace rings or pistons, they don't come out the bottom. As for replacing main bearings, you can replace them with the crank in the car, we do it all the time.
