After I scraped the engine block to remove the old headgasket junk, I decided to vacuum the block and pistons to remove the junk. I was sorta zoned out while doing it and I sucked a black cup that has a small hole on one end. I sucked it out of one of the oil passages towards the front of the block deck.
I don't remember which one I sucked it out of. It was either one of the middle ones.
Where does it go and how do I put it back correctly?
(the engine is a '89 2.5l in a turbo van)

goes in the oil feed galley drivers side front of the block... It's the oil restrictor and you DO need it there

But it doesn't fit in the oil feed hole. I think the oil restrictor is still in where it should be. What I sucked out only fits in one of the large oil (return?) holes. It is black and made out of a sorta hard rubber. It has a couple of ribs on the inside of it and smooth on the outside.

Any ideas?

I did rebuild the engine in my Daytona last year and I really can't remember if the oil restrictor was in there or not. Is there any way I could know if it's missing without taking the head out? The oil pressure is good.

What would be the symptoms of an engine missing that oil restrictor?

Bump - because I'm starting to worry about my new engine not having one.

I would like to know too. I am not sure mine is there either.

If it's big enough to fit in one of the big oil returns, it's gotta be something that was dropped into the block by accident at some point. It's not supposed to be in there.

sorry. i didn't clearly note the referance points. the restrictor is on the forward section of the block near #4 cylinder for those who don't know. this is where oil is fed to the head. the oil drain hole (1 of 3) is the larger hole that is protruding from the top section of the photo (front of block between #'s 3 and 4).

as you can see my restrictor is still there.

I've actually run my engine without the restrictor. as i recal the 1981 engines didn't have any restrictor, then there was two different sizes. I think one was a hole size of .095 then upped to .120. without the restrictor you loose some pressure at the bottom end and end up with a lot more oil on the head. this would be advantagous to the flat follower cams. now for rollers, not as much oil is needed up top but I still like having a sufficient quatity. a high volume oil pump is what i use on the flat cams just to ensure adequate oiling to all areas.
