I just got my new pistons back from the machine shop. I'm putting 86 pistons in an 85, so they have the valve relief cutouts on the top.

On one side of the pistons, there's the letter 'f'. If you point the f towards the timing belt, you can read all the part #s on top of the pistons. Is this the correct way to go?

Or, even simpler, anyone have a picture of their pistons with the head off?

Thanks

d

Valve reliefs? That's not right.. They should have a dish if they're turbo pistons. If they have valve reliefs, they're N/A pistons.. Maybe that's what your working on, but being that this is TURBOdodge.com, I have to assume.. Anyways, I'd line up the valve reliefs with the valves....

Wrong... All stock style Chrysler turbo pistons are dished with valve reliefs cut into them...

Reliefs go to the back..... Firewall side.

Ahh.. Informative. I think I looked at my '85 pistons last. Don't remember them being notched on my '89, but it's been 6 months or so since I popped that one open last.

Just for the record, I'd like to say that I believe it was the previous owner who cracked the pistons...not me.

Seriously though, thanks guys...I should have this baby back together one day soon.

On a related noted...anyone have any tricks for cutting down rings? When I stick the new rings in the cylinders, I can't seem to get my little gauge in between the ends.

You are going to need a ring grinder... Parts stores might have one you can borrow.. Autop zone here does that.

When you do.. be careful Only a couple tunrs can make a big difference.

Yeah those are what my new pistons look like, the ones with the valve relief. I just got .020" over mahle pistons, their supposed to be the best cast piston right?? Anyways, why do these have the valve relief and my old ones dont? The valve relief must obviously be better, but how?

The 85 head has a big 'bathtub' area where the valves are recessed. The 86+ used the 782 casting, which doesn't have that recess...at least not to such a great extent...so they had to change the pistons.

Or so I've read...

Even with out valve reliefs, the swirl is non interference with a stock lift cam. Not by much, but it is.

Valve reliefs do not make anything "better" just by their presence Dustin.
