As far as ordering parts goes, you should measure and check everything yourself before you send the parts off to the machine shop. *Some* machine shops love to find problems that don't actually exist. The shops around here love to screw us over when it comes to purchasing new parts. "We can only order hypereutectic pistons, but they're much better than the stock Mahle pistons you were going to order" Think about it, you bought pistons and rings from a place other than the machine shop... do you think the shop is about to say the "other guy's parts" are ok? No! They want you to buy everything from THEM so they can make some extra $$. I've received more bad advice from machinests than I have from any other person.
When it comes to the neon syncros, well, they don't fail without a reason. A synchro is a very simple device. In my experiences, syncros fail for two reasons: A clutch that isn't releasing all the way, or due to poor driving habits. I'm sure some other people could chime in here... How many mustang and camaro transmissions do you see with a bad 2nd gear syncro? LOL
I could be totally off here, so please feel free to comment on anything I posted.
