My 86 Tona quit out on me while driving down the road. The block is 87 T2 with less that 1000km on it right from Chrysler. If you wiggle the rotter it has a hair of play in it until it gets to one spot
where it has about 90 degrees of play. When I look down I can see the gear teeth are nicked too. Anyone ever hear of the gear going on the 2.2's? I'll have to pull the oil pan and look for pieces and total gear condition.

yup, had it happen to me to in my 87 CSX

as far as I can tell the teeth on the (cast iron) pump drive shaft broke off first leaving a rough surface that chewed and milled a bare spot on the oil pumps gear. Needless to say buy the time the car dies to let you know this both parts a junk.

If you haven't taken it apart by now I can tell you you need;

oil pump

oil pump drive shaft

new oil and filter

oil pan gasket and RTV

and know how to set your timing cause the timing belt is coming off

So unless your timeing belt and accessory belts are new you might as well replace them too while you have that all apart, If you got the extra $18 you might want to do the water pump too because it will also be under the mess of time consuming odds and ends that you will have to wrench through to get to the oil pump drive shaft.

Like I siad, the belts and water pump arn't realy needed but they do wear out sooner or later and there all pretty cheap and once you get everything apart that you need apart to do the oil pump drive shaft it just makes sence to do the extras now rather than have to take it all apart again.

good luck
