Should crank be moving left and right

when i got underneath my car, i put a screwdriver on the one side of the crank and moved it left a little, found another spot and moved it back right a little

is this normal?
it doesn't move much, but still moves
some spaces look closer together at spots along the crank, while some other seem farther apart, normal? or is there flexibility on these cranks that allow themselves to center themselves once the engine is running?

also, is it normal for a crank to rub against the block somewhat when it is newly rebuilt?

i have a sludge on the bottom of my oil pan, i think there is a small amount of metal in there, cause it is colored a little like metal and small specs are in it, any ideas from what?

it sounds like your thrust bearing is getting "ground" up. if its an auto, was the torque converter seated in all the way in the trans? if it's a manual, i don't know what could have caused it, but it sounds like a look in the pan should be in the VERY near future to see what is actually going on...

left to right, is that as in back and forth, parallel to the block, or front to back, in reference to the front and rear of the car. also there is a spec for the endplay of the crank, but it should barely be noticable, i don't have the actual spec though,,, any help???

back and forth as left to right, parellel to block
not front and back of the car
the FSM says there should be some play in it, like up to .5in or something
but it seems like something is getting ground up slightly or something is rubbing

if the engine is newly rebuilt, should there be a little rubbing from the crank or something else on the block??

and the car is a manual

any more help?

You have ground up your thrust bearing and thats what all the crap is on the oil pan. It could have been too tight when built and the crank made its own clearance. Stop driving it now and take it apart. Is it a 5 spd or auto?

End play clearance spec is .002-.007
You usually measure it at the crank and thrust bearing when assembling the engine.
