How many of you have upgraded and/or modded your oil system to avoid oil starvation? Is oil starvation a major cause of rod knock? I thought it was. I gave my oil pick up more spacve by cutting a larger opening. Seems to work well. Thinking of getting a pick-up from a 2.5L or 3.0L. Anyone forsee any problems by doing this?

The 2.2L / 2.5L blocks have a very efficiant oiling system from the factory, in fact almost too efficiant. Here are some modifications that you can do to reduce windage and coeficiant drag in the oiling system.

1) Crank scrapers
2) Oil sheding coatings on crank shaft , rods, bottoms of pistons
3) Port match the oil pump opening to the block opening
4) Polish oil returns in block and head
5) Grind open the hole in the pump pick-up 1.5 times the original size....Notenot anymore than 1.5 times or cavitation will occure)
6) If you prime your oiling system before start up remove the check ball in the oil filter to block adapter (only if priming before start up)
7) coat the oil pump gears w/ moly bendum
8) use high flow high quality synthetic oil filters
9) use an oil cooler
10) oil pan baffles and windage trays

I think these will get you started , and I will save the real tricks for my own use... good luck!

do you NEED to do this, that is, remove the check ball when priming an oil pump on the first start of rebuild?

and can i remove it all together and run the car without it?
thanks, Justin
