Are we talking 89 and newer common blocks or older style motors. You can usually tell a 2.5 because it has balance shafts and the pan is taller (lower to the ground) and usually more of a square shape as opposed to the rounder more sleek 2.2 pan.

yes but everything you are saying is relative. How is one to know if they have one mystery engine in front of them and nothing to compare to?

Tops of both pistons looks the same. Pans look different. I guess you'd have to know which pan is for which engine. Crankshafts you'd have to do some sort of measurements.

NO! They look kind of similiar, but the 2.5 looks like an ashtray compared to a 2.2. The dish on a 2.5 is HUGE.

so 2.5 doesn't have balance shafts

if I'd put 2.5 pistons in my 2.2 TII along witht he 2.5 crank (is it forged) would I need to change over anything else? would this mess with my 2.2 knock sensor?

The 2.5L crank actually has 2.5 cast into one of the counterweights near #1 main.

The crank is cast & no, you don't have to change anything since you already have the 33 pph injectors.
You may want to get a 2.5 'puter though.

My 2.5 ran a bit lean with the TII 'puter & excellent with the 2.5 'puter.

so ALL parts needed are 2.5 pistons, 2.5 crank, and 2.5 SMEC. Is this all? Also year specific? Do the parts need to be from a turbo or not? Expected price to pay? Resulting power gain?

The thing is I have a brand new head on this damn "beater" I bought, and now a rebuilt turbo is going in, I figure why not rering the block while I'm at, so why not get 2.5 pistons since i have the common block.

because the 2.2 TII is stronger, and revs higher and faster than a 2.5.

btw, the 2.5 does have balance shafts.
