A couple days ago I decided it was finally time for those balance shafts to come out of my 89 Spirit 2.5 Turbo.
I researched it all here before, so I went and got another oil pan and pickup (old one got a dent right over top of the pickup when my brother tried to drive over a cement barrier in a Taco Bell parking lot)
and found a good grade 10.9 bolt to use that gave me a full inch of thread engagement.
The oil pan and pickup came out of the same 2.5 turbo 1989 minivan that gave me my new 413 transmission I just rebuilt. I'll buy the short block also to keep for now and build up someday. The bolt was laying in the engine compartment and was the perfect size.
I also got a 1/4" bolt 2 inches long at the hardware store. After cutting the hex head and threads off, I had a smooth inch long plug for the oil hole. Fit was perfect. One finger to lightly push it in, no problem. Maybe 0.002" clearance at the most.
So with the new bolt and a slightly larger flat washer and some green loctite and brake cleaner to degrease everything first, the new pan and plug was cleaned and installed last night. I put a good 50 ft-lbs or so on the bolt with green loctite.
This car does not need any balance shafts! Not even one shaft. It still idles smoothly and quietly. Oil pan hold an extra 2 quarts now, for 6 total. Oil will stay cooler and last longer. And it adds to the sleeper appearance, knowing that the engine surely has a few extra horsepower now!
Horsepower tests to come from the dragstrip this friday night if it doesn't rain.
