oil pressure great on cold startup, but when it gets hot oil pressure goes way down and at 0 at idle, this has been verified with a mechanical guage as well.

when i rebuilt the motor i did not use anaboric sealant on the oil pump to block mating surfaces.

so i will be doing that this weekend. heres the questions

1. I have been kicking around the idea of getting a higher volume/pressure oil pump... is this a good idea?

2 my pickup has the round bottom with the screen inside, can i open the metal casing up a bit to allow more oil to be sucked in?

3. I have read about oil pickup to pan clearance, how is this checked and whats a good clearance.

4. whats the best thing to use when installing the oil pan back on.... gasket or sealant (what kind?)

thanx for your time and wish me luck

1) I heard that it puts an undue mount of stress on the Intermediate shaft. I wouldn't worry about it. Most cars here are running stock volume/pressure pumps.

2)I think it would be a good idea. More oil it can suck is more oil it can push.

3)Not sure about this one. I would say do it the same way they measure piston to valve clearance. Put a big god of modeling clay on the pickup tube and put the oil pan on. Measure the size after you take the pan back off and that'll tell you how much clearance there is.

4)We used the end gaskets from the gasket kit we got I think, and then used silicone sealant on the other part. It works so far, hopefully we shouldn't have any problems with it before. A guy that we know was a Chrysler tech, and he told us to do it that way. I trust him on that.

Good luck with your adventure!

also when i put my new oil pump in it had the opening for a 2.5 pickup tube so I had to switch bottoms with my old one (hole was too small for my tube). could this have caused a issue?? especially if i didnt use any sealant on the mating surfaces.

I dont think the lack of sealer here would make much differance. Theyre such smooth machined surfaces. Any idea on your bearing clearances? I'm assuming this is with your new motor.

Maybe you just have a bad pump. What pump did you use? You mean you have NO oil press at hot idle. Hmmm... weird.

nope none at all, and the top end will start to make noise because of the low to no pressure. I used a melling oil pump, but the one i got i had to take the bottom off of it and use my old one because the hole was to small for my pickup tube

The fit of the gears against the plate is critical to the pumps operation. Maybe the combination of a worn plate, lack of restrictor, and no sealer against the block is causing this.

thanx for the info, i dont know why it had the wrong end on it. i looked up a oil pump for a 2.2 and 2.5.... same number, but my pickup would not fit in it at all... which is why i switched er out, your post makes sense

were there two different size pickups on the end?

i will let you all know the results.
