i have a 91 shelby daytona 2.5L aftermarket Garret turbo, intercooled, K&N filter, turboXS BOV she blew on me about a week ago. fried a couple pistons and gave it a lower rod knock! i dont know why and need too. now im swapping with an 89 shelby 2.5L turbo. if i put the bigger garret on the new engine will it blow again????? i need reliability cuz im going to college soon. heh HELP! i will keep the intercooler and BOV also. i just need to know if shell blow on me again and why it did in the first place. i was thinking maybe the boost is set too high. 15 psi too much?

You just answered your own question. HOw do you know what your air/fuel was at 15 psi, you probably went lean and melted or detonated it to death. How did you get 15 psi???? Factory cutout is 14.7 psi????

The only thing I would be concerned about is the turbo. Every engine I've seen that has had a spun bearing or a bad main/rod bearing knock the turbo has gone out within 2000 miles after the new engine is put in. Little bits of metal get into the oiling system and end up in the turbo bearing and ruin it.

I just tore down a turbo that this happened to. The shaft didn't look pretty. The turbo itself only had 1200 miles on it, then a rod bearing spun. Rebuilt another engine, installed it and the turbo went out 400 miles later. Several turbo rebuilders that I've contacted said this is a common occurance for the reasons stated above.

With the new engine make sure that you get and monitor an A/F ratio gauge possibly even have an EGT installed with the engine. Then you'll know if you have enough fuel and won't damage your pistons.

if you dont have an A/F gauge, just hook up a digital multimeter to the O2 signal wire in the meantime. you've probably got one of those, right??

Which is why you get a seperate oil filter for the turbo. Ive ben looking at some synthetic oils lately, AMSOIL seems like a good company. Might want to check out a few of their filters. AMSOIL bypass filter
