Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on pistons?

I'm in the market for a GOOD forged piston?

IE: JE's, Venolia's, Ross, Wiesco!

I will also be shopping in the forged piston market soon.

At the local machine shop, they recommended Wiesco, JE, Ross, and Mahle. I haven't heard of anybody running forged Mahles.

The Ross pistons through RP have been proven. I cannot recall the specifics, but they withstood 1700 egt's.

From searching/reading the board, Wiesco has very good tolerances.

2.2 and 2.5 pistons are different though. I think I will be going with Wiesco or Ross for my 2.5 pistons. The 2.2 piston doesn't have the nasty habits of the 2.5 piston.

1) The Venolia's I had inspected varied in critical areas such as bore size by as much as a thousand and a half between all four!

That means additional machining costs since the machine shop has to size each bore for each pistons.

Ross & JE pistons? Good to a tenth of one thousanth piston to piston.

Mind you this is just one spec on the piston- What about other "less" important specs like dish volume and pin placement? If Venolia can't get an important spec like bore size consistent what makes you think the rest is where it is suppose to be?

2) Tighter piston to bore clearence with Ross and JE's.

3) Advanced piston ring placement for maximum ring durabilty.

4) Extra pin oilers machined into the piston for maximum pin life and resistance to pin galling.

5) Aircraft grade pins.

6) No need to spend *EXTRA MONEY* purchasing *CHEVY* bushings and having to pay a machine shop to bore out the small end of your connecting rod weaking it and getting the Chevy bushing pressed in.

Use of the Chevy pin allows a cheaper piston of course, helps the vender out but the end users pay more in the long run due to weaker rods, need to purchase aftermarket bushings and machine shop costs.

You get what you pay for, when it comes to forged pistons I'll take steak over MacDonalds any day of the week.

I run stock spec'd Venolia's straight from FWD Performance and have detonated the engine with over 25psi with no major problems, just pitting on top. Go with what you can afford.

Standard bore Venolia pistons are $25 MORE than Ross standard bore pistons!(for a 2.2)

The question is, do you want THE best, or second best?

i hate the warm up period for the venoilas to expand and conform to the .007 race clearances. noisy. will go with the wiseco next time and keep the venoilas in the "spare" block". opinions, preferences, and prices. forged is better than cast..... take your pick. no matter what, aluminum melts around 1600 degrees. sustained of course. i believe the ross have the better ring placement though.

We run Venolia's that I designed. Chev .927 taper wall pin. Flat top, with pin buttons to support the oil ring which sits over the pin.
In most applications, any forged piston will do. Most guys upgrade because they've melted a few cast slugs and want the extra protection.

On turbo engines almost any forged piston is better than a cast piston. In my dads camaro we run cast and they are strong as hell. In our case cast pistons was cheaper, and did the job and is still doing the job fine. In your case forged pistons are the better chose.
You chose depends on many things
1> Budget
2> Exhaust temp.
3> Detention problems
4> clearances

Now on to the companies.
From what I have readied JE's, and Ross are vary good pistons.

One last note. STAY AWAY FROM Hypereutectic pistons. They are good for non turbo engine with no Detention problems. From what I have read, they crack easy, and melt easy.

I have some forged ordered and when I get them, will have them coated for extra protection. Cheap insurance!

Where do you get them coated at? Is it exspensive? Do you just get the skirts or the top coated, or both?

Doing nothing wrong, it makes more power than a WRX and alot of cars on the road.
Its a stock TIII turbo thats so out of its map its not funny-so mega hot air and I am running a 8v head and small intercooler with an automatic-whats yours make?

As for coatings, I can only afford the top but he does all 3, top, bottom and sides. Check out www.performancecoatings.com
