What do you mean what they are like? The friction coatings help on cold dry starts, the thermal coatings wont do much until there is heat.

It's just like any other motor with no coating except for the dry film lubricant on the piston skirts that protect the cylinder walls on a cold start.

Not true. There are coatings on rod and main berings, cam berings and lobes, etc. These all protect on cold starts to a certain degree. The thermal dispersants and barriers come into play when the temps get going.
