Well, I just got around to getting the final touches of tearing down my engine finished. I got the pistons off the rods and freeze plugs out and was about to call the machine shop when I noticed the rods had different numbers on them. There's three sets of numbers on them, two of the sets are identical but the other ones are not. I have two rods with VFB21, one rod with VFA21, and one rod with VFA20 stamped on it. Why are they different, are they the same rods just stamped on different days. BTW it's a '89 2.5L CB so they should be forged and have floating pins, how can I tell if they are forged and have floating pins, I had to pound them out pretty hard. I can try to upload pictures if that will help. Thanks in advance.

Well, here's all the numbers that are on them. All of them have on one side this number: 4323958. The numbers that are different are:

VFA20 E MS405 cyl #3
VFA21 C L MS405 cyl #2
VFB21 C L MS405 two of these cyl 1,4 if that makes a difference

That's all the numbers. If you guys need anything else let me know.

The 4329538 number is the part number,if I had to guess, the others would be some manufacturing codes. You know James Bond stuff we dont need to know much about. And looking at a set I have here, theyre different too.

my guess would be something to do with the machines that worked on those individual rods and some sort of time code.

you know, for quality control purposes.

I'm guessing they are the forged ones. The block is stamped 2-17-89, the number doesn't show up on thedodgegarage site, but it's very similar to the 87-88 part number, only difference is those end in 7, mine end in 8. Anyways the block should be at the machine shop this weekend...finally.

All "our" rods are forged.

You're thinking of the light weight vs. TII/2.5 TI rods. The LW rods were used in TI's from '86 up, until the 2.5 TI came out in '89. 2.5 TI rods are the same rods as TII rods.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I was searching for info rather than posting a new thread.

Anyway. . . The rods I just pulled out of an 87 TII block also carry the part number 4323958. I checked Gary's site to make sure they were what I was after, and he has the 87-88 TII rods listed as 4323957. I believe he may just have a typo in the site, I might email him and see if he'll change it.

waaaay old thread, but ms405 interprets to English as "MS stands for material specification no 405 which is different between forged rods and TI cast rods."
This comes from a fellow I met that was way big into the 2.2's and 2.5's...
I'm not sure about the vf numbers though.

Have you checked/compared the weights of the rods? Way out thought -- maybe the codes are related to the total and big and small end weights.

To your question about floating pins -- the ones that I have seen in other engines have circlips or something similar in the piston to keep the pin from sliding out.
