Hey! My 87 2.2 Turbo1 motor has rod knock. It has a rebuild recently with new pistons but old rods with new rod bearings and new seals. The crank was not turned but it does have a new head. It was not knocking before the rebuild but started knocking about 3,000 miles after the rebuild.

Question 1: Anyhow the rod bearings were replaced on a motor with 90,300 miles without doing anything to the crank. Could this cause problems?

Question 2: I was hoping I could pull the oilpan off and pull the bearing caps off. I was told by a friend that if the part of the crank that the rod bearing "rides" on is not egg shaped or elongated I could probably get away with just replacing the rod bearings. Would this solve the problem possibly?

Question 3: If the crank is damaged I'd have to have it removed and turned at a machine shop and/or replaced. Is this correct?

Question 4: The waterpump and oil pump were not replaced with the rebuild. Should I go ahead and replace the oil pump while I have the oil pan off or should it be fine?

Explanations of answers to the above would be greatly appreciated.

Also - can somebody tell me what the most common causes of rod knock are?

common cause of rod knock??? low oil pressure is one change the pump to a high volume it will drastically increase the engine life.

Depending on what he's doing, a Hi volume pump is not needed for street and hipo use, all they do is suck more power, make the timing belt work harder, the stock oil pump is more than capable of doing the job.

NOw, rod knock causes, lack of oil changes, bad oil pump, blown head gasket and coolant damaged bearings.

The only way to guage the fix is to take off the pan, check all the bearings and see which ones are damaged. If the bearing didn't spin, then the rod should be ok. Check the crank for damage, light scuffing is ok, just get some emery cloth and polish it. When putting new bearings on, make sure to measure with plastiguage. Install a new oil pump, oil and filter. Prime the engine, remove spark plugs, disconnect HEP and crank over engine till oil pressure guage reads. Your done.
