i have picked up a 1983 2.2 carb motor and was thinking about tearing it apart to use the rods on a new motor for my charger

my question is are they both press fit ?? and can i use the rod caps from a 87 lw rod ???

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me say...take those "LW" rods and trash them!!!!!!!!!!! i dont care if you are building a turbo, or a tbi, or even a carb car.........stay away from the "LW" rods....its for your own good.....friction is the killer of all hoserpower no matter what you build... and full floaters in every engine would be the best. but you do have one of two way you can go with this....just depends on whats in the budget for the project.......1. take T-II rods and get custom pistons ( depends on if it is carb or tbi for flat tops.....or turbo....for dished) or ....2. take 89 and up turbo (almost T-II rods with the diffrent rod cap bolt size) and have your pistons honed to full floating with C-clips installed on them........this has been done both way at my local machine shop I go to....it just comes down to what you can afford to spend.....either way you get a very strong rod to handly a hard turbo or the most insane N2O system you want to run.......

a quote from the dodge garage

The best rods to use are the TII ones (which require a floating pin piston) or the 81-85 2.2 rod (which do not). Basically the same rod except no bushing for a floating pin.

Ummm.......when did the early carb motors get inferior rods?

According to Gary Donovan, the 81-85 rods are as good as the TII rods. The LW rods only went into the TBI/carb motors anyway, not the T1's.

i think the rod caps from the lw rods are the same as those from the 81-85 but i'm not positive, but i think you'd need them machined if you were to swap them around.

ok this quote from the dodge garage page is not the complete quote..... the "LW" rod isnt nothing but junk.........

1986 - 1994 2.2L Rods are "LW" (Lightweight) Part # 4387736
1987 - 1988 T-II Rods Part# 4323957
1989 - 1994 2.5 CB Rods Part# 4323958

"The best rods to use are the TII ones (which require a floating pin piston) or the 81-85 2.2 rod (which do not). Basically the same rod except no bushing for a floating pin. All 89-93 2.5 Turbos use 89-90 TII rods. 91-93 2.2 16V engines use the TII rod with better bolts.

86-88 2.2 TURBO I rods are 30 grams lighter than the above rods and should be replaced at the first opportunity! They are not suitable for performance engines and will fail with no warning.

The 86-95 TBI rods are also not suitable for performance applications, however the 82-85 TBI/Carb rods are great replacements for pressed pin motors. Stock TII rods are safe to about 350-375 hp. "

Yes and if it's a preformance engine have the rod bolts replaced with performance bolts and have the rods resized. Forget about switching the caps.

Thanks
