My daytona had some issues when I bought it, which I am in the middle of sorting out. Just a quick run-down: the car was smoking, and stalled out on cold starts. Only way to keep it running was to tap the gas. After oil change, there was a strong smell of fuel in the oil. It was later found the the vac lines where off, causing it to run really rich. Once vac lines were corrected, the smoke went from dark black to a greyish color. There was also a sweet smell from exhaust fumes. It was at night. Head is not cracked, as it was removed and pressure tested. Now in this process, it was discovered that the coolant levels were very low. This was why the head was pulled. Is it possible the block is cracked, even though there is no coolant in the oil?

Just trying to get an idea of what is going on. Now to go out in the cold and put my car back together

You may have popped the headgasket while the vacuum lines were off. Do a compression check.

How high? your guage is either way off or someone milled the shit out of the head and block and used TBI pistons-you shouldn't have more than 150 psi without oil, maybe 10 or more with oil.

The block cracking is rare, I bet head is cracked or you had a blown head gasket-which is very common.

It is a remanufactured head. Head is good, and the hg I removed was also good. I'll double check tomorrow.

Even tough the head is a reman, could still be bad. Have a machine shop pressure test it if you can't find any signs of leakage. Cheap to do, around $45. Are the piston tops clean? If not, you might have a blown turbo letting coolant into your exhaust system!

Already had the head p. tested. Came back good. Suppse a blown turbo is a possiblity, but I still think the car was low on coolant because it wasn't filled. Something to think about though. The smoking situation did clear up a bit, after the vac lines were straightened out.
