I had not planned on doing this until next year, but I found a T2 at the yard. An 89 shelby that appears to have fallen victim to a mechanical defect, as there are no dents in the body. Anyhow, the head has been removed, and decided to take the manifolds. The block sitting there has me thinking. A buddy wants me to pull the trans for him, which would make it very easy to get the block. Not knowing what condition it is in makes me somewhat leary. Of course a cb is the ideal block to build on, but can anyone give some hints of size of extensive damage? Also going to check with a chould to get a basic rebuild done. Like most of us, I would like to mod asap, but it should be done right the first time. No sense in modding an engine that wasn't made for the power levels I am looking for.

T1 is the same as T2 with the exception of a different crank. Cast vs forged which is no big deal as they will both handle stupid amounts of power! Also the T1 could be either a 2.2 or 2.5, the T2 is a 2.2L

Wait a second. tdg said the t1 rods aren't worth a poop. Maybe I wasn't clear on that. The rods and pistons are my main focus of interest. Seeing as the t2 block is stronger, it would make more sense to get the whole package. Am I making more sense now?

Carlton forgot to mention that his car currently has a non-common block T1 in it.

Turbovanman forget to mention that the 89 T2 block is a common block and will handle lots more power than your T1 block.. which SilverShelbyz indirectly pointed out.

Thanks, but I covered the block being a t2 in my initial post Is it possible for the block to be cracked, or damaged beyond repair, is what I am asking. The car was stock, so the block should be decent enough for my future projects then. Suppose there is no real way to find out without buying it, and having it tested.

Just caus' its a T2 block does not mean its a common block. There were T2 blocks in 87-88 and they apparently werent any stronger than a T1 2.2 block.

Also... I could be wrong.. but the chances of a block from a stock or virtually stock car being cracked or damged beyond repair (aside from it blowing up) seems pretty slim.

I agree. I was just stating I knew it was a t2. As to being a cb, that I am still looking into. Funny, because I thought that all 89+ td's that have i/c's are cb's. Back to www.thedodogegarage.com

But do they all have the stronger T2 pistons/rods/crank?

Yep, all turbo CB's have the goodies. T2's have a forged crank which Donovan says is way heavier than cast but they both can handle the same power level or thereabouts. Same rods, pistons different obviously.
