So the head has been pressure tested. Came back "ok." The compression test was high. Extremeley high actually. I was reading through my Haynes manuel at work. passing the time. The section on doing a compession test states; if the numbers are high with oil in the cylinders, the rings are bad. There are plenty of sub factors to consider: bad cat from sitting so long, carbon build up from the vac lines being off, etc.. Not 100% sure the rings are the problem, but it cannot be ruled out. Might be in the market for a T2 block soon. No sense in replacing with the weaksause

White smoke. Orig turbo. Head was from sqirrel, not sure about valve guides. Car smokes IMMEDIATELY after starting, like there in an inferno in the engine. Believe the egr is the reason some smoke come from engine bay. Poor seals. Seems to me the piston rings are shot.

White smoke is coolant!!!!! Rings will not cause white smoke, only blue smoke. Seen as your head has been pressure tested and checked out fine that leaves 2 options-
1) your block is cracked or deck surface is badly warped, pitted.
2) your turbo is cracked and leaking water into your exhaust system.

When you pulled the head off the first time, what did your pistons look like? where they clean as in someone had pressure washed them or were part of them clean, ie top or bottom or partial top or bottom. If the answer is no to all, then you definatly have a turbo problem.
You can also disconnect and plug off the coolant line to the turbo and see if the smoke goes away! It might take a few days to burn it all off but try that, just make sure to idle it for 5 mins or so after a good run.

The pistons were covered with carbon. Lots of it. I'll disconnect the coolant lines, and see how that goes. Rather replace the turbo than mess with the block anyway.

Ok so if they were covered in carbon, your rings, block and head are fine.
