Common blocks do not usually have a fuel pump block off plate,
as the factory did not add the hole for a manual fuel pump. The
early non-common blocks did have this hole.

How many people have seen a common block WITH a manual
fuel pump hole?

Only one that I have heard of was from Dean Stillie who runs the 10 sec Rampage. He posted once that he had seen one and although he is from Ontatio Canada I still believe him. Tell us about the one you have discovered and it will give me something to read as I am waiting for more Christmas cards to arrive!!!

Thanks
Randy

I've got one! It was a '92 TBI Acclaim. Threw me for a loop as it didn't have balance shafts either. Mexican export car.

The 89 TC's were a grab bag . They came all three ways , old 88 style non-common block , common block with pump block off plate , and regular common block .
I've seen warranty and service (parts dept.) motors that were common blocks with the plate also .
From what I gather they're simply the first run of common blocks .

Well, what i bought was a engine that Ed peters built. It is a common block (2.5) but "does" have the fuel pump block off. And now I have discovered another little difference. It does "not" have the round bosses that are near the distributor that my 1989 2.5 mini van engine has. This engine looks really GOOD! Can't wait to put it into my Turbo Plymouth Relaint wagon.

The engine in my TIII does not have either the Bosses near where the dist would be, or the block off plate. Those bosses were used for the Eng mount when installed into a Dakota Truck, or on the Masi 16V they were used as a boss to mount a support bracket for the Intake manifold.

I have a friend who got one that was made in '93. From what I understand they were blocks made so that the older carb cars could get a new engine if they needed one, and the new common block was the "standard" but didn't have the fuel pump hole...so they made some that did. All the good stuff of a common block....all the needed stuff to run a carb or fool the unknowing into thinking you are still using an old block!

Was there ever a pre-common block that didn't have the block off plate? My 88 casting date blcok I'm using has no plate, and has a huge "C" stamped on the backside of the block.

I don't know what it is.

Common blocks (yours should be) have a different rear "line" to the pan area. If you look at the back of the engine on a pre-common block, the area where the bolts that hold the pan to the block, it jogs out at each bolt area. On a common block it is straight.
