I have a large letter "C" stamped on the backside of my block. The casting date is 1988, but it has no block off plate on the motor.

Anyone know what this thing is?

If I remember correctly it means that it is a block make in Mexico. Those blocks are supposed to be better than the average common block. Congratulation on your find.

Update, a little more reasearch showed that the C on the front of teh block down below the destributor means it's from Mexico with better overall quality, ala Russ Jerome's site.

HOWEVER! My block also has that C on the front of the block, BUT IT'S BACKWARDS! Yes, teh C is stamped backwards! What the hell is going on?
