I am building a hybrid motor so I have to use the 89+ round tooth crank. I have a 2.5 turbo core motor and what I believe is a T-2 forged crank (I bought a bunch of parts from a guy converting his 89 Shelby to a RWD drag car). It is round tooth but how do I tell if it's forged? I know the cast crank is lighter and I can get a 2.2 common cast crank from the junkyard. I want to know if it's worth the weight savings to bother with the getting cast crank. I've been told the cast is plenty strong, but should I take the chance when I already have a forged. Also since I'm using different motor parts, will I need to align bore the block or do any special machining? On both cast and forged cranks is there any machine work to be avoided that could hurt the integrity of the crank? I've been told that some cast cranks are hardened or coated on the bearing surfaces.

Thanks for the info, so I do have a forged round tooth crank. How much power will the extra lbs actually cost? If it's minimal I might as well use it rather than going to the junkyard to find a cast one. Now for the second part of my ?. As long as the crank is good can I just use it in any common block? Will I have to align bore the block for the new crank? Also, is there anything a machine shop might/could do that could hurt the integrity of it? Please pardon my ignoance, I've never had a motor rebuilt and just don't want to take any chances. Thanks again for any info.

The forged crank you have being heavier is said to gain RPM's
slower, dont recal reading it would "lower" your peak HP but I
can say personely a cast 2.2 with 16v rev's VERY fast under
load. If its a street car I would just use yours, thing is gonna rev
like you wont believe. A good shop is going to align bore it if
they know it is a perfomance rebuild, they will do nothing to
a forged crank to weaken it.
If it is a race car, real racers go to great lengths to lighten
and knife edge there cranks for reaching there HP goals much
earlier.

Is there anything a machine shop could do to weaken a cast crank? It will be a race/pizza delivery car . I want to run 10's so a cast is probably the way to go.
