Has anyone had any bad things happen when using sealed power pistons? Talked to turbosunleashed today, they said stay away, and to buy forged. Thats great and all, if you want to spend that kind of money. let me know!

If its a 2.5 and you want to make decent power, buy forged. Post more info on your proposed setup and plans!

They just aren't as strong. If you plan to stay stock there's no problem with them though. The stock Mahle's are stronger but are still frail with high boost. I've already replaced one of my Mahles cuz it cracked. If you are building a hi-po engine do it once and do it right go forged.

The motor is a 88 turbo 2. My thinking on the whole piston thing is this. If you keep your fuel mixture right, and watch your e.g.t's, than running any brand of piston will be ok. I can understand buying forged if I wanted to make 400hp, but thats not what I'm after.

First t2 car, very fun to drive!!
getting ready to set the timing on the car, has anyone had any positve effects playing with the timing on a stock camshaft?
thanks again

The piston itself cannot take the cylinder pressures of high boost and will still crack.

Thats not true, the piston will take any pressure but one spike of detonation at higher boost and BOOM,

If your going to make 100% sure the tune is right and you are a little cheap, run Cast, if you want to do it right and dont' want any worry of countless ashtrays, buy forged. Incidently, ran cast pistons for 1 1/2 yrs at stupid boost levels with no cracking.

2.2's are easier on pistons than 2.5 so you have that going for you.

Oh, theres nothing wrong with Sealed Power, thats what I used.

If I remember correctly, sealed power only makes the *hypereutectic* pistons for our cars, but why buy sealed power pistons in the first place? Last time I priced them out, they were more expensive than buying a set of Mahles! Check out FWDperformance.com or do a search for Northeast Machine. I've had good luck with both vendors. For the record, I've run 25psi on stock Mahle pistons on 2.2's and 2.5's. It's all in the tune. I've also broken a few 2.2L and 2.5L pistons due to bad injectors, wiring, and calibration problems. I hope this helps.

Nah, they make both types. There was/is a fella on here that runs 30psi on them.
... not bad I'd say.

I have brand new 3.0L v6 Sealed Power Pistons sitting in my garage, from what i'm hearing from this thread, Sealed Power is generally acceptable. I still haven't installed them due to lack of cash, i'm getting some annoying piston slap or something. The previous owner of my car gave the pistons to me cause that was the last thing he wanted to do to the car.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Sealed Power pistons. This is the 6th year on them and 31psi of boost and not a single problem on CAST pistons - 533p's to be specific. But just like turbovanman said, you must be in tune. At wicked high boost levels, one ping and you have some sweet decorative ashtrays. I know the success of my car (and longevity of pistons) is due to my finely tuned calibration.
