I don't think there is anything wrong with JE's, just don't know if you can get them that light without braking the bank.

In regards to Gary's coment about the Venolias...it is interesting. My machinist thought highly of them, as they were very close in dimensions and weight. I won't be using them again though. Too loud.

On the subject on skirts (piston skirts, that is): what is the deal here? My Venolias were 2.2L, but had basically no skirt. I'm sure that contributes to the noise. Are the JE/Ross/Wiseco pistons skirtless as well? That would be annoying.

does anyone know the measurement of a wiseco (stock bore)? i have an 89,000 mile motor with little to no taper or out of round, would like to keep it standard bore if possible. i have a dial bore gauge, so i know the meausurement of my bores, just wondering if, when they are honed, they will be beyond the .035 clearance wiseco calls for.

what DOES a hone do anyway besides scratch up the cyl wall with all those crosshatch marks? and what kind of changes does honing usual make to the dimensions of the bore?

Very little change, I suspect, but it depends how long you do it for. You are basically setting up a surface that is proper for ring break-in. I think the tool on the boring machine leaves a slightly grooved surface, so they maybe have to hone a little more than someone doing a re-ring.

I believe honing at a machine shop can take up to .005'', someone correct me if I'm wrong! But I believe bottle honing wouldn't really take anything off.

Depends on the hone, if you use a bar stone type, you can remove alot of metal, some use this method to get exact bore clearances. The ball hone, not much if any.

I have some JE's going into my next shortblock for my 2.5 and they look very stout, nice skirts-same as the stockers. Bore clearance is only .004" so it shouldn't sound like a diesel when cold. I will get one weighed for comparison. Oh and there are no sharp edges, they have all been rounded off.
The only reason I got these was Venolias I heard way way to loud and .007" bore clearance is ridiculous and Gary didn't have any .020 Ross pistons,

I use the bottle hone, it's real easy and hard to mess up! LOL

I would love to see a pic of a 2.2L Venolia, JE, Wiseco, and Ross all side-by-side.

The PISTON skirts have 2 functions. Minimize piston slap and bore wear, AND heat disipation (heat transfer). The bad is extra weight. Aluminum transfers heat quickly so the extra skirt (PISTON) should make a big difference.
