I have an 1989 NA 2.2L out of an omni. would this be a good block to make into a turbo engine TII?
If so what does it have going for it, and what internals might have to be changed?

common blocks were available from 89+ strongest of them all. and yes, they're good for the T2 since they used the same block.

T2 still keeping the 2.2 or upping to 2.5L?
you'll need everything BUT the block from a T2 vehicle. pistons, rods, crank, head, manifolds, turbo, intercooloer, etc...

and alot of research.

Yeah, good block. You can even use the crank, it saves on weight. I built a real nice engine that's got a cast 2.2 crank in it for my GLHS. Planning to make about 350whp with it..

Like BLUNEON said, use internals out of a turbo engine. You could get away with TI rods, but TII rods are recommended. Turbo pistons should be used as well, though some guys are using TBI pistons for better off-boost torque. Since it's an '89 block, you would need a crank out of an '89+ block, OR redrill the end of the block to accept the '88 older style seal housing (not easy and definately not for the neophyte). The N/A block has the port drilled and tapped for the coolant line, but doesn't have the oil return line from the turbo. I've converted them by drilling and tapping a 1/2" NPT hole at a 23' angle, then screwing in a piece of 1/2" NPT black pipe. If that scares you, you could rig up an oil drain tube in the top of the oil pan and just run longer hose. I'm in PA, which is a tad far to be of much hands-on help. Good Luck.
