Use either a stethescope or a long screwdriver placed against your ear to try to isolate the noise. If the noise seems to be coming from the oil pan rail, then you're probably looking at connecting rod bearings. If the noise seems to be coming from the middle of the engine (head to oil pan/top to bottom), then it is probably cracked piston/piston slap. After you've entertained yourself doing these checks, add 2 bottles of STP Oil Treatment to the next oil change of 20w50 and drive it until you get serious about putting together another engine, or sell it.
I put 40k miles on my '89 TI 2.5 Daytona with a cracked piston and I couldn't blow it! I added an intercooler, upped the boost to 12.5, then used 89 octane middle grade fuel to see if it would blow. No such luck. I finally sold it because it was too durable. I guess I like rebuilding things LOL!
