bleh, I was driving my new daytona home when it started smoking. I pulled over immediately (within 10 seconds) and noticed my cam seal had come out of the side of the head. I installed a new cam seal and fired it up, but it was running REALLY rough. I did a compression test and came up with
#1 155
#2 160
#3 155
#4 20?

i squirted some oil in the plug hole and #4 came up to 30. This has me wondering about #4 because i've seen cars with broken pistons that have 3x the compression. I KNOW it didnt lean out so I am assuming the piston ring is bad. Would that cause the compression to be so low? The engine has less than 50 miles on a complete rebuild. I'm wondering if anyone has seen a motor with that terrible of compression so soon after a rebuild (without being beat on of course) I'm pulling the piston later today so i guess i'll know for sure what happened then, it just struck me as really really low. btw, i was running 94 octane and the boost controller was set to 15 psi, but i was only pushing about 5 psi when this happened.

Can't say what blew it but guaranteed its a broken piston. Were they new pistons or used?

You could have had the cam timing wrong, base timing wrong, fuel injector went lean?

They were new pistons, well atleast theres a receipt for pistons in the folder the guy gave me. Bought the sucker and made it 15 miles twards home when it blew up I really doubt it leaned out because the plugs are black, it smelled very rich when it was running, the fuel pressure gauge was reading quite a bit higher than mine and i didnt hear any det (though that doesnt mean there wasnt any). it also has +40 injectors and a 3bar. Its quite possible though it had a timing problem, because the guy i bought it off doesnt seem to know anything about cars. hopefully i'm not looking at any cylinder wall dmg and i can use this as an excuse to get some REALLY nice pistons

Thanks for your insight,
Chris

The guy that rebuilt the engine is probably scratching his head wondering where that extra set of piston rings came from. "Did that Turbo Dodge I just rebuilt come with a set of 5 rings?" The ole "Hey! Howcome we have leftover parts?" syndrome.

Ya man I would pull it back apart, wouldent keep running it you might do some damage if the piston is cracked

ugh, so i pulled the oil pan and no big hunks of metal fell out, which is good i suppose. i cant see any damage to the piston from the bottom, and the wall looks good (can still see and feel the hone). now my problem is the rod cap nuts are STUCK. i went at em with everything i had, even used my foot and a cheater bar and they wont budge. i thought these things were only supposed to be 40 ft/lbs + 1/4 turn.... SOOOO, i'm assuming the RETARD who rebuilt the engine used air tools to torque everything down... they guy i bought the car from said chrysler did the rebuild, but this is making me question that. To top this all off, i have to start school again soon and wont have any time to work on it how much ballpark do you guys think this should cost (labor only) to have a shop rebuild the sucker for me? And no I havent even thought about starting it up after that compression test (even though all my friends are bishing at me cause they want to hear the beast...)

Shops vary, but a safe estimate should be around $500

sweet, 500 isnt bad, i was envisioning much worse heh. i'm pretty sure now it is the ring land, it has hypereutonic (sp?) pistons and i've read that happens with those quite a bit. thanks for the help everyone!
