hi guys im wanting to rebuild an extra engine i have for my daytona. its an 86 block. a couple of questions for the gurus. should i have the crank worked on? and what should i do with it? im planning on going with new cast pistons. should i bore it out? what performance gains will i get from boring it and how much? .30? is there anything else i can do to make it strong? turbo2 rods maybe? im only planning on running around 15 psi. any more suggestions are appreciated!!!

thanks guys

Have the crank checked. Sometimes the crank is fine with just a polishing, sometimes the rod journals and/or main journals need a more serious freshening up. As far as boring it out, the only you might see added performance is if you have it bored using a torque plate. FWD Performance will rent you one for 2 weeks for $50 (+ dep.). Then, the performance gains are negligable (compared to adding more boost). The standard overbore is 0.5 mm, or 0.020". TII rods will add strength. At 15 psi, I'd use ARP rod bolts and have the rods reconditioned. Use new (preferrably ARP) main bolts, and new head bolts (again, ARP recommended). Use only the Mopar Performance head gasket. You could get the pistons thermal-barrier coated, and anti-friction coated.

The greatest performance gains are found in porting the head and exhaust manifold, higher boost, and larger intercooler. Of course, some of these changes will throw your factory's computer out of calibration. Highly recommend installing a few "eyeballs" in the cockpit so you can monitor what's going on; O2/AFR, boost, and EGT/pyro gauges are pretty much standard. Learn what the numbers are and what you are targeting (www.thedodgegarage.com). Personally, I'm playing around with lightweight parts and cryogenics on the engine I'm currently working on. (Google search: cryogenic engine parts)
