Hi all,

I'm back to running 27-30psi of boost on my little 86 2.2 and have had to drop the spark gap pretty low on some random Chrysler Oil filled coil (rotor/pickup/wires are good, supply voltages are good). So I'm looking for your best recommendations of a powerful ignition coil which might let me keep a gap of ~1mm on the plugs, and yet one that doesn't cost $200. I'm a cheap TD guy.

Preferrably a part numbers or vendor links?

Thanks for your expert recommendations.

Relocate a new (stock) or blaster coil close to the dist. This is the only reliable mod i'm aware of..

I use a blaster up to 32 PSI with a .28 gap.

However, don't forget there are actually two spark gaps. One on the plug and one in your distributor.

I bent the cable ends in the distributor so the are closer to the rotor. I also pinched the metal in the rotor so it comes out further. Just make sure they don't touch.

P/N?
That sounds like the ticket for a stealthy approach!

stay away from accel. Tried 2 accel's in my satellite, they both sucked, one even started leaking oil after about 6 months. In the trash it went, popped a junkyard stocker on and it's rumbling around better than ever!

hmm, not too sure. I can try to look it up for you. You may find it faster via a search on the Crane website.

Had a blaster (3) poop out on me after a while at 25 psi. Got a recommendation from another member, DUGZSHELBY, on a coil he uses with good results:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
He uses a .5 ohm resistor to protect the SMEC driver because this coil has impedance of .7 ohm's.

How many volts does it take to jump a spark across that?

Sorry. Had to give a little jab over that 9/32" gap stated. I know you meant .028.

Stay away from Accel anything. I no longer know of any product they make that is worth buying. Years ago maybe, but not today. They have become a company of junk products propped up by an established name.

No need for that here, I have spare power modules. (to be honest I doubt the extra load will burn the PM, it seems to gave a good tolerance) Now running a Blaster 2 at 27-30psi, it runs clearly better, especially up top. Compared to my old stock coil. My gap is still pretty small (0.75mm), going to try increasing it slowly.

Yep, those Blasters sure can jump the spark gap.

BTW, I also had an Accel drop dead on me after only 2 weeks of use.

Also, one more thing about making good spark... Most people are running a high performance fuel pump which draws more current. As it turns out, the pump and the + side of the coil both share the same puny wires. It's a good idea to seperate these two with their own wires so there will be less voltage drop to the coil.
