i was trying to stay away from the later model stuff because ill have no good place or an intercooler......plus i use to own a turbo 1 lebarron way back......and i was really impressed with that car.......now that engine on a 1600lbs beetle should be something else.

your best bet would be use 88 t1 wiring, those didnt have an interccoler and were 2.2. 89's were 2.5 so the smec would be different and a 89 2.2 t2 would be calibrated for a intercooler. Or use 88 or 89 wiring and get someone to do a custom cal for your setup. 87 and below wiring sucks cause you have a seperate power module and logic module, 88 and 89 combined them into one unit called a smec

yep, the only real difference is in the cal. can choose to use an intercooled one or not .you really want an ic if you can find room for one tho, it is sooo worth it. for limited space setups, consider an air/water core. they are ideal in this situation because you can use a fairly small intercooler core, and run hoses to a heat exchanger (small radiator) in a place with more airflow. in your case its especially suitable, since you could put the heat exchanger in the front.

i have been thinking about the intercooler thing......for my purpose i dont think i shoud use one.....im trying to keep the engine aroud 150hp.....because the stock beetle tranny will probably have a hard enought time holding that.....if i had gobs of cash id love to get a 300+ hp 2.2 and a porsche 915 transaxle....but im poor...lol....and i wanna do this from start to finish for car and all for less then 3k.

This'll place the engine behind the rear wheels or are you going to flip the tranny?

nah....engine will be in the rear.......i thought about using a 914 transaxle and making it mid engine.....but that would turn the bug into a whole different project.....plus i want back seats.
