I have had this problem since i bought the car. I will get to about a quarter of a tank of gas and the thing will sputter after i go from an incline and flatin out. then is slowly gets worse, till it die's and leaves me stranded. I dropped the tank today and everything was fine, i really don't know what to check now... u guys have any idea's

Wrong fuel pump brackets or sock? When i put an aftermarket pump in, it came with a kit that was supposed to be bolt on. It didnt go in quite as smooth as it was supposed to, but its in there. Now when get on the throttle when its at 1/4 tank or less it sputters very loudly. Needless to say the pickup isnt in the gas all the time when the tank is that low.

The sending unit is probably defective. Just get a whole new unit. You should be able to tell the difference physically if the old and new weren't made for the same tank.

the sock fell off on my new yorker or wasn't put on properly and fell off on install. Anyway it would do that at 1/4 tank. Make sure the sock is on it, the pump is in the hanger right and the sock sits in the baffle on the floor just about.

i already have and it looks fine, it was a lil hard taking the sock out with the pump but everything looked fine... im still pretty lost on it

well the mopar 2.2/2.5 book tells you that you can find this problem. i know that my car has done it sence teh day a bought it. according to theim theres not really much you can do about it. unless you want to make a "strage" tank like your larger fuel tank vehicals have ex 33gal dodge ram 3500 diesel. it woud take a little though and thats about it. you could mount it under the hood run the press from tank into the top w/ the outlethaving a longet pickup that goes to the bottom from the top, then the gas comming in would still force out what is already there into the outlet to the injectors. sure it would take a little tweeking to the idea for air removal if it did suck a bubble but you get the just.
but one more thing to add to that my car does it both on steep inclines but also if i corner hard on low gas. oyu have the same problem? a real fix! just fil up at half a tank. it hurts less for walet shock anyway...

My old sundance used to do the samething before I got rid of it. The problem started after I installed a Fuel pump and hanger out of a junk yard 90 Dynasty. It worked like it should until after I replaced the pump From then on whenever I was below 1/4 tank if I turned left or stopped in a hurry or went on a big hill it would sputter and either die or almost die

What kind of car is it?
On my Shelby Charger, the baffling/bowl (not exactly sure what it is) more than likely broke loose. After that, it was a pain under 1/4 tank, but was drivable. Now when the car needs 9.7 gallons, the thing will barely run. This has a 13 gallon tank. The late Dave Grove, (from SDML and Grove Automotive) told me about the bowl problem. Most people tried to tell me "They all do it. Get use to it". Ah, no, they don't all do it. At least, not when they were new. I use to be able to run that car right down to nearly empty. I bought the car when it was only 3 years old with 35,000 miles. He said there was a plastic bowl that kept the fuel near the sock. It was very common for them to break free. I figured I'd live with it but then it got worse. Now I believe the sock actually fell off the internal pump. I don't know for sure, but that would explain why the car barely works when it needs 9.7 gallons. Even when I'm driving slow on a flat straight surface. I'll be junking the car out after this next winter. Too bad the rust got to it so badly over the 18 years I've owned it. I still love driving it, but when you want to go any distance, it's really a hassle to fill the tank so often.

I had an '85 Woody Wagon that did this. I replaced the pump and sock, but then it wouldn't run, or even start. I pulled the new pump and jumped it to 12 volts, it wouldn't try to spin. Traded in the new pump for another new pump, worked OK, but not as it did when the car was new.
Also had a '68 Dart that had a sock seam split open, and of corse , the seam was on top, and when the tank reached a certain level, about 1/4 tank, hills were a *****. I hated that car, until I figured out the problem. The sock seam split on top mean't it would suck air, and stumble like hell, and not run.

I know everything is installed perfect in the tank, the sock is good and everything. the car is hard to start... i just realized that i do not have my charcoal canister on my car, so my rollover valve is open after the valve... i dunno im pretty freakin lost

i have a shadow that completely dies at 1/4 tank. so this means i cant run the car much more than 200 mi before fill-up. ive been told it has to do with the pump unit. i should be taking it out shortly to find out. i ll let you know what/if i find out

ya... im thinking about getting a whole new pump, even though mine is pretty damn new... just to see if it makes a difference, i have had mine out and everything checked out fine, i had my buddy who is a certified dodge mechanic helping me out and we couldn't figure anything out... i really don't know what else it could be... i even went as far as checking for anything leaking, spraying wd40 around everything to see if i could get a rpm spike or drop... and nothing happened, i've read on previous threads that people say its normal and just to live with it.... but it just bugs me, plus i have to drive 190 miles to college and i come back every other weekend... i just want to get to the bottom of it... plus that would solve several peoples problems. Just to re list what has b/n done, it has a new pump walhboro 255, a brand new tank, new everything since i just rebuilt the motor... and this was happening b4 i rebuilt it... i pretty much have narrowed it down to the fuel lines, pump, or maybe the fuel return? I also have tons of pressure in the tank... it will hiss at me when i pop the gas cap... so i dunno, im just going to have to dig deeper... im going to take it down to school this week, im becoming a certified dodge mechanic at osu and im going to see what my instructors have to say about it
