Hey all!

Im working on my 85 laser xt... just did a 5 speed conversion, 88 intake, hybrid turbo, and intercooler, im getting ready to put everything back together again and I have a question about the electronics.

I still have the stock 85 LM, I know if i use this with the 88 intake stuff im not going to be able to use the AIS motor.

My question is, is it worth the small effort to swap to an 87 LM to make everything work a bit better, or should I just manually tune the thing to run without the AIS?

Im on a pretty tight budget here... but another couple hundred for a new LM with a custom cal probably would only set me back a month or two.

Also, since i did the 5spd swap, will that send the auto computer into convulsions or anything?

Sorry if this has been answered before, ive spent over an hour searching and havent seen this exact question...

Thanks for all your help guys!

Thanks :-)

Yup, i read the sticky up there many times, seems like a pretty easy thing to do... i would just need the 87Lm.

I was just wondering how much better the car would run with the swap as opposed to just trying to make the 85 stuff work.

If you switch to 87 LM, I'm pretty sure you'll have to switch the 85 distributor out too. I know they changed to the short, fatter style distributor in 86 (instead of the taller, skinny one in 85), but I'm not positive if the older distributor will work with the newer LM. I seem to recall that it won't. Sorry about the unsureness, but I figured I'd at least give you a heads up that there's an additional item that you might have to figure into your costs.

hey!

from what ive read, yes it looks like i have to change the distributor too... keep forgetting bout the minor details!

thats why im wondering if it might just be easier for the time being to fiddle with the stock 85 stuff to get the thing running til I can upgrade in a few months

thanks for the replies so far!

StarCat: What did you wind up doing? I am considering using my 85 LM as well for my T2 swap. I know this thread is old, but I have the same question. I have heard of only one person that has done it.
