well, i just got done building my megasquirt 1 v3 and am sitting here with nothing to do except think about how awesome the ability to actually tune one of these piles is going to be, so i figured id start a thread to document the conversion.

as the car sits now, ive gutted out every peice of stock electronics that were under the hood.. everything electrical under the hood is going to be brand new and custom so i dont have 42 ugly useless plugs relays and solenoids for a/c and emissions and whatever dangling all over the place and problems will be easier to trace. both stock computers and all of the stock wiring is being eliminated. the battery is also getting a new home on the passenger side

im going to be using the stock distributor and hall effect sensor to trigger a stock replacement accel coil, so the amount of modification i have to do to get the car running is pretty mild.. the biggest thing is going to be interfacing the new underhood wiring with the stock firewall passthrough

ill keep this updated as i go, and once im done ill write up a detailed step by step type article on getting msns-e working with our stock ignition systems because its turning out to be a lot easier than i always thought it was

hopefully it stays that way, ive still got quite a bit of stuff to do

drop me a PM on how to setup the stock disty setup on a 2.2 (2 connector HEP) I'm currently running edis-4 and 36-1 wheel, I want to get rid of the edis module and pickup ring, but still fire the VC mounted coil pack , I know it's possible by wiring in a second vb921 ign driver from one of the LED outputs but i think the code is not out yet, I know ms&s extra will do it but i'm MS2

as soon as i have everything confirmed as functional im going to post detailed directions.

its fairly simple though as far as i have gone so far.. the stock distributor shutter vane with the hole in it needs the hole welded closed, or it can be replaced with a tbi distributor which has no hole from what ive been told. then you just wire up the IBGT ignition driver circuit for use with msns-e, run a 12v pullup to the hep's tach input, and thats it.

when the car runs ill write a nice step by step so hopefully we can get more td's properly tuned, because its not nearly as hard as i was always led to believe it is to run the stock distributor and not have to mess with the edis stuff

stuff
Don't even mess with the turbo distributer. That is thin crappy metal with a curve in it. I would give you my tbi distributer except I ruined it trying to cut out that second turbo window to use it in a turbo.

All new wiring. Are you going to stick with like 3 colors? I always thought that would be good enough to not go crazy fixing things, but not too much wire to buy.

the megasquirt ecu will be in the passenger compartment somewhere, from there im running a db37 cable through the firewall to a relay box that contains all of the relays and fuses necessary, the relay box output is a screw type terminal strip, same way as amps are hooked up, and from there the wiring goes direct to ehatever its controlling.. nice and simple. for wiring i am using this

40 bucks for 12 ft of every type of wire ill need and a lot extra, preprinted with function... troubleshooting is going to be 100x easier with this setup

I can't wait to see a writeup, as I have the MS1 also. (sitting in bedroom)

After I witnessed two vehicles w/ MS, I am a true believer.
One was a turbod 2.4 Sunfire (stock block & tranny), the other was a turbod non- intercooled probe GT with a fresh Jap-spec motor.
Both of these vehicles had awsome idle, gas mileage, & both ran low 13s with mild tunes.

You are a true contributer- keep it comming

if you use the relay box it's a waste, I run my Fuel pump & cooling fan with the stock relays, in my opinion the relay box is useless (marketing scheme)

don't get me wrong it'll be easier, but if you can take a motor apart, after that whats hard ?

ohh yeah BTW, The printing wears off after a while...

im running a relay box for mainly aesthetic reasons. im kind of going all out on this project so i want it looking as clean as possible, and i also like the idea of having absolutely everything electrical on the car being brand new.

plus having everything on a terminal board under the hood undeniably makes things easier to work on in the future.

i could have saved over a hundred bucks by skipping the relay board, so believe me i put plenty of thought into it, but i am going for all out ease of use/ease of modding/clean appearance so i think im going to be happy with it

im going to run MSII on my hybrid this summer. a kid i work with has a probe with a turbo and MSI- runs pretty well for a very rough tune. im fortunate i guess cause the motor im using to build my hybrid is a mexican common block N/A- strongest block and the right distributor. the printing will only wear off the wire if its exposed to fuel or oil, LOOM IT! keeps things from chafing and looks a lot nicer than wire wrapped with e tape. im probably gonna strip all the fact wiring out of mine as well- last thing i want to deal with is 17 year old corroded wiring giving me electrical gremlins to chase down- i get enough of that at work!!

my omni after a few hours with a wirebrush, soap and water, and rattlecan of black antirust spratpaint. the megasquirt wiring is going to run under the lip on the fenders and along the firewall where the stock harness runs. i am going to put time into making it as clean and invisible as i can. ic piping and 1g dsm bov are going to be polished mildly and clearcoated. the vacuum lines are red silicone, plug wires red magnacores. should look pretty cool when its done

im going out to start wiring this pos up in a few minutes, and i finally picked up a cable for my camera today, so i can upload pics

its possibly the crappiest digital camera on the planet, but my decent one got smashed and its better than nothing heh
