And I want to replace it with a known working one, is there any possibility of it getting fried?

Is the rad fan and coolant temp sensor run off of the SMEC because neither is working, the fan is hardwired into turning on with the ignition.

Have you checked all your fuseable links? Cause if you had a bad smec your car would be doing alot more then that.

What "Kills the Drivers" in an Automotive Controller is a Motor or Solenoid that has Excessive Resistance or Current Draw.
GM had Major Problems in the Mid to late 80's and Early 90's with PCM Failure,
Tech would replace PCM and within a Month or so Vehicle would be back with a Dead PCM.GM added Amperage Draw Test to there PCM Replacement Chart to determine what was Killing the Drivers in the PCM.The Dead PCM was only a Symptom/Casualty of a Solenoid with High Current Draw.
