i went to use a timing light to set the timing 100% and when i unplugged the coolant sensor the fan kicks on and the timing mark stays where it was. it started from 0-2* when i started but the mark should have moved?, right?

Well i took the wheel off to double check the belt timing and it was good (maybe, i didn't really care to check, i just took it apart and reset it). Now everythings back together and the car idles the same BUT when i unplug the coolant sensor everything goes nuts and the engine revs at like 500 and i open the throttle to keep it running.

also now the timing mark jumps from the far left of the window to the far right and to the middle. what did i break?

the car is an 89 tona 2.5t

Are you using a timing light with an advance meter? If so you can set the meter to 12 btdc and set the mark on 0 or leave the meter on 0 and set the mark to 12btdc. Unpluging the coolant sensor with the vehicle running puts the vehicle in failure which brings timing to base and the controller always turns on the fan in failure as a failsafe. If you played with the belt be absolutly sure the cam timing is correct. If the vehicle will not run be sure that there is not any carbon buildup on the throttle plate,in the ais housing and on the ais pintle and that base idle is correct.
See the "Sticky" in the help section " help with poor idle" for the procedure.

With the engine running unplug the CTS and set the timing to 12 btdc.Shut the engine off and reconnect the CTS.

The idle speed may be so erratic because the timing is off. When the timing is set correctly the distributor will be parallel with the block. If the distributor is not then your intermidiate shaft moved when you installed the belt. Remove the little plug on the throttle body over the idle screw and turn it slightly to increase idle to see if the vehicle will run, if it will not recheck your cam timing 1 more time.If the belt is too loose it will also cause the mark to jump around.
1 tooth off will create a lot of problems.
When you install the belt you have to rotate the engine 2 revolutions by hand and then double check that all marks are still lined up and belt tension is correct.
When you are done then you can follow the sticky to be sure idle is correct.
