I know this has been covered a million times. Does anyone have a guide to installing an EGT probe on a T2 engine in car? The minimum things that need to be removed etc. I'm trying to get my race car ready for summer and I have a lot to do and can't afford too many more delays. A lot of things are out of the engine bay already and I'm worried I'll have trouble come reassembly time. It's an autometer I'm putting into an 85 Turbo Z w/ an 88 shelby T2 engine setup. I'll be installing a wideband O2 but that I can handle.

Thanks,
Pete

You can do it in car, I did mine that way. You will however get metal chips into the exhaust manifold, but it never hut my turbo. I removed the airbox and all turbo hoses. You will be drilling your hole on the #4 cylinder (driver side). It should not be too difficult to drill out once the hoses and airbox are out of the way. Go about an inch and a half away from the head or about the middle of the manifold runner. Then drill away. I used a tap to thread the hole I made for my probe setup, that was a bit tricky, but still not too bad. Good luck.

Ive got mine mounted about 1.5 inches from the head on the #4 runner and it works great for me, my temps seem to relate well with information I have gained from others too.

Ah, doesn't sound so bad. That stuff is already removed. So to clarify, do I need to remove the intake manifold? I've even got the master cylinder and p-valve out and the brake booster is coming off tonight.

I've seen some knowledgeable guys put them into the swing valve or collector area too. What matters is paying attention to the baseline reading for the location that the probe is in. Changes from that reading indicate problems.

Next will come the argument as to not reading the hottest cylinder or getting an average reading from the probe not being in one cylinder. In reality, you will only get an ideal (data) situation by using (4) probes. Putting the probe in one cylinder is more useless than in the collector or SV . While the change may "average" with it in the collector or SV, it will still show up. Putting the probe in one cylinder abandons three others as far as monitoring temps goes. Just something to think about.

At this point I just want to install the thing. Nothing worse than dropping money on parts that sit on your shelf for a year. I think monitoring one will be fine. If an unmonitored cylinder goes real hot or something it's likely too late anyway. If I can't put it in #1 or #4 easy enough I'll just put it on the collector. I can always move it later.
