i really dont see what the thing does or how it works. I know that there is the SMEC and non-SMEC versions, but as to there effect on things, i have heard / seen mixed results.

Power modules are used on 85-87 turbo cars (and TBI). These are always used in conjunction with a logic module mounted inside the car. The logic module (brain) controls things like boost, fuel, timing etc, and is the part that you would upgrade for performance purposes. The power module handles the "heavy lifting" under the hood. Newer SMEC and SBEC cars put the logic module and power module together in the same "box" (Single Module), and later, on the same board (Single Board). A bad power module can cause myriad problems, most commonly voltage regulating trouble, but also can cause drivability problems.
