coil resistor

i found one that im gonna have to use... how can i test it with my multimeter to see if it's the 0.8 ohm that i need for the msd? does it go in-line or just attatch to the (+) side and just bolt to the body?

Measure resistance across the 2 terminals on an Auto Ohms Scale or Ohms Scale.
The resistor will be installed inline on the feed side(+) of the coil.
You can mount it on the fender or other body panel near the coil.

im pretty sure its a factory one.. there is a small cylinder with one wire comming out and a hole to mount the cylinder. is this a factory one or no?

I would need a pic, Chrysler has not used an external resistor for quite a while, was used on the carburated cars (2 wire and 4 wire), they were white and about 3" long and 3/4" high with a hole in the center.
I could be wrong about what they were used on but I have not seen an external resistor since I had my 72 Duster. The 2.2L/2.5L used an internal resistor and if you go aftermarket performance coil they usually tell you if you need to install a resistor for your vehicle.
Check the manufacturer's web site for the coil you are using.

it's an MSD blaster 3 coil. in the paperwork it says

"NOTE: This Blaster Coil Kit is intended to be used with an MSD ignition. If installed on a stock, points style ignition system, a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor or resistor wiring MUST be installed. MSD offers this Ballast Resistor as PN 8214 or the Blaster Coil Kits, PN 8202 and 8223 are equipped with one.

WARNING: Failure to use a ballast resistor could result in personal injury or component failure."


what is the "MSD Ignition system" can i do this or no?

Yes you can use the coil with a resistor. The MSD has no internal resistor and if the system does not have a resistor inline then one must be installed.
GM uses a resistor wire in the circuit, the 2.2/2.5L does not it was part of the coil so you must add one with your MSD coil.

ok so, mount this resistor, run the + wire to one end then from the other end go to the coil?

Yes, that is all you have to do, find a good mounting loction where the terminals will not contact any metal and it will not vibrate loose and then just cut the existing + coil wire and put on female spade connectors and connect to the resistor.
Back in the day Chrysler had the resistors mounted on the firewall but I would prefer mounting it closer to the coil.
