I was driving the other day in my shelby lancer and all of the sudden the engine just completely cut out and came back to life all in about 2 seconds. Just today the thing puked at a traffic light and it took me 45 seconds of cranking to get it to start again. when i was cranking it was not trying to fire it was just turning over with seemingly no spark at all. then all of the sudden it fired up like normal. its got a new cap rotor coil plugs and wires. car is throwing code 54. any suggestions before i get stuck for good?

that sounds EXACTLY like a HEP failure. next time its idling, pop the hood and wiggle the HEP connectors around and see if you can get it to stall.

remember, it might be the HEP connectors, on the harness side, and not the HEP itself, which would mean you could still have the problem after buying a new HEP

would a failing hep cause it to be a bit sluggish and hesitate during acceleration?

Yes, if you had a faulty HEP or wiring to it this could cause it to hesitate or be sluggish based off of your symptoms above.

MANY things could cause that, but a failing HEP which causes random fail-to-fires could do that

When it is running try tapping on the dist edge with a screwdriver and see if it quits. I milked mine for a couple months like that. 150 miles then quit, pop hood tap with screwdriver and I was good to go for about 10-200 miles. lol. It has been beat to death on here but if you replace it DO NOT BUY ANYTHING OTHER THAN A MOPAR HEP!

Look at the tach. next time it acts up. If it freaks out and bounces all over or just jumps around it 99% a bad HEP.
