I just finished dropping in a new motor in my 84 laser. I go to start it and nothing. I check for spark and nothing. So I ended up checking the voltage everywere and it is at 7 volts. So far I have checked the fuel pump , coil and tps. The battery is good and so are the connections to it. What could be doing this?

It's at 7V everywhere, or just at the coil?

If everywhere, check your wires from the battery. Make sure the grounds are clean.

I have a good 12 volts at the distibuter, but only 7 at the fuel pump and basically everything that is connected to that harness which I think also the injectors. I am getting 12 volts inside also. If I put 12 volts to the positive side of the coil the fuel pump turns on. Any thoughts?

Well, the distributor, injectors and fuel pump all all on the same circuit (fed by the ASD relay). So if you have 12V at the coil but not the pump, I'd check the wires to the pump.

Could also be a bad ASD relay, I suppose. In 84 it was external to the power module, so you'll find it somewhere under the hood (not sure where on '84 models). On '88+ models it's a black plastic bodied relay on the drivers side strut tower.

Well just replaced the ASD relay and still nothing. I am not getting 12 volts to the coil, I was just jumping it over directly from the battery. Could this be a bad PM?

Does the ASD relay kick on at all? Also, remember that the ASD relay will not stay engergized unless the engine is either a) running or b) being turned over (i.e. by the starter). It'll come on for about 2 seconds once the key is turned to the on position, and if the LM doesn't receive a signal from the HEP within that time, the ASD relay gets shut off.

Did you check the computer codes? Could be it's not getting a HEP signal.

Well I didn't know that, I shall check the ASD again, I was just checking the voltage when the ignition was on. There is no check engine light, I really dont even know were it is. I have never seen the car running but I have the digital gauges and it doesn't even pop on when I turn the power on.

Well just checked again and still around 7 volts. I did some more poking around and found that there was 7 .5 volts at the PM, does this sound right?
