Hi there,
I have a 85 GLHT with an 88 T2 swap and other mods. Swapped out the gas tank, due to leaks and at the time, changed to a Walbro High Volume fuel pump from the stock 2 pump setup (one in tank and one in line). The problem I had was that the stock GLHT sending unit wouldn't hold the larger Walbro HV pump. I ended up using the sending unit from the new gas tank, which came out of a non-turbo 88 Omni 2.2, as it was able to hold the pump. Anyways, when I turn the key, the pump kicks on fine and I'm getting proper fuel pressure at the fuel rail (58psi). My question is, could using the 88 non-turbo sending unit cause any problems? As mentioned, I have good consistent fuel pressure at the rail, but I ran into some other mechanical problems (lost compression). I'm wondering if it could relate and/or if the change in sending units could cause a problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you having any problems right now? Or do you just want to know if it's ok to use a newer sending unit? I have one in my Shelby Charger & it works great. Forward Motion used to sell them in a kit to use the Walbro.

Well, as I said, I'm getting good fuel pressure, but I've now had two engines that appear to have developed bad rings extremely prematurely. I suppose what I'm wondering is whether the sending unit can effect fuel volume to the cylinder, even if the pressure is correct? Or, if the fuel pressure can remain proper at a stand still and then become excessively high and/or disrupted when driving the vehicle?

C'mon fuel sender ONLY tells you how much gas you have in the tank!! The wrong one won't wear out your rings.

Sorry if the question seems ignorant. I'm very new to dodge turbos and I'm a psychologist by trade, not a mechanic. Someone said I may have washed the rings, which seemed impossible, given the correct fuel pressure and the fact that the new engine only ran for 20 minutes before I lost compression. Thanks for clarifying the function of the sending unit. I appreciate it.
