Accufab AFPR, no washers installed... should I?

I got my adjustable fuel pressure regulator from FWD-P not long ago and installed it yetserday. I have not fired it up... and I installed without washers because I did not realize I needed to until a thread caught my eye about it. Being already installed, should I fire it up first and see if it leaks before pulling it off and adding the washers? Or just take it off and put the washers on first? Finally, I read that the unit can score the injector rail... would one just remove the rail and use some light sand paper and smoothen the inside out if that be the case?
