I have recently rebuilt my 89 2.5l turbo I with a garret T2 turbo, +20's, Comp Cam, etc.. Today I go to turn the thing over once everything is finally all together and she won't lite. I have troubleshooted the wiring and found that the positive coil contact has continuity to the ground terminal. Also, when I hooked a computer up to it and turn the ignition to ON, everything is normal. Then I turn the motor over, only turns over with no spark. I turn the ignition to off and take the key out, there's still a small residual power that runs through the whole car and most importantly the "auto shutdown" relay which isn't allowing the computer or fuel pump to turn off. I believe it is to be a short but have not been able to find one yet. PLEASE save my sanity with any advice, Thank you.

There will be continuity between + and - coil terminals, that is the primary windings.
As far as the ASD staying actuated, the controller only controls the ground side of the ASD on the DB/YL wire. The output is the DG/BK wire and the other 2 are power feeds from batt and ignition switch.
The DB/YL wire should not be grounded after the initial fuel pump cycle(1 second when key is turned on) until the controller see's a crank signal from the HEP.
You may have a ground problem and a circuit feeding back looking for ground.
I have seen a blown fuse for a completly different circuit create these problems if the stray voltage finds a ground path thru another circuit.
Check ALL fuses with a test lamp for power in and out.
Are there any fault codes that may give a clue?

Hey thanks for the help. I checked all the fuses and they seem to be good but I have done some more troubleshooting and found some other surprises. I measured the voltage across all the computer/sensor grounds and they're all the same including the negative coil wire (detached from the coil), they all give a reading of 5.4v +/-.1v but when I measure between the ground cable and the body there is a reading of 0 (which would make sense). I also found there to be 0v in the circuits within the car (except the cluster negatives) which leads me to believe it has to be in the wiring harness itself and not anything just touching the body. I now have 95% of the engine wiring harness ripped apart and found that when I turn the ignition off and the computer stays on b/c of the 5.4v holding the ASD, if I remove the o2 sensor the ASD shuts off immediately. I tried turning the computer on after without the o2 sensor plugged in and read +12v on the coil negative wire along with all the other computer grounds just like before but when i turned the ign. off the thing shut off right away like it should. There is continuity between the + & - (source from ASD and ground) in the o2 sensor, I'm not sure if this is supposed to be or not but it would make an obvious short if it isn't to be this way. But i'm still not convinced that it's the o2 sensor thats the problem, i think it's just a strange coincidence since there is still a short to ground when the computer/ASD is on. With the fault codes I haven't checked, I don't think i can since my computer will stay on unless i have the o2 pulled or cut the power supply. oh I have a wiring diagram for the motor too, should I post it?

If it is a heated O2 sensor the ASD also supplies power for the O2 heater circuit.

yes it is a heated o2 sensor, i think it's the first year for it. I'm going to see the guy who helped me wire this thing in the first time, I have looked over it till my eye balls got tired
