Might be a loose wire from the speed sensor.

I am having the exact same problem. Did you figure it out? If so, what was it?

I havn't gotten it fixed yet. but... I did take the instrument cluster out and clean the connections. I found some dead bulbs.lol and some corrosion. Shelbyturbo has got an extra instrument cluster I am going to try. let you know after that. BTW: what kind of car do your drive?

Mine HAD the same problerm, here is what I did:
I took mine appart yesterday- an 88 gtc convertible. I removed the speedo from the cluster, in the back of the unit I removed about 6-8 screws total, they are little silver ones. There is a small motor (glued to a small board) on the side of the speedo that is held on by 2 screws- take them out and look for crap on the little gears. Mine had what appeared to be a little gear tooth that broke off- but I was unable to see were it came from. I removed it , reassembled and all is good now.

Thanks allot for your help, I'll have to try that when I get my car running again. The turbo (hopefully) took a huge **** and it makes an incredible knocking noise. looking forward to tearing my engine apart.

I guess a working speedo would be worthless w/o an engine = (

I took my cluster apart anda got down to the speedo, however it appeared to be held in by three gray wires. I was unable to get the speedo out more than an inch due to these wires. Any ideas? Did you see the same thing?

yeah, that's all I did, I worked the little side motor out a bit and was able to find the offending piece of plastic clogging up the gears. Unless you mean that the whole speedo is still in the cluster, then you have to pull the speedo out entirely from the rest of the cluster. there are 3 pins that attach to the speedo by friction, just pull the speedo out. I also used tv tuner cleaner from radio shack to clean and lube the gears up.
