Wow, great minds think alike. I was looking into this exact same thing about a week ago, and here's a URL I found with some helpful info:

Casper Knock Monitor

It appears that the knock guage won't work without a GM ESC (Electronic Spark Control) module from a mid-80s GM V6 vehicle, but there's a part # in that URL the find it, or a junkyard find may be more possible if they have anything still sitting out there that's that old.

the best thing to do on these cars is either learn how to modify your cal or buy a cal from one of the many people doing them.

Many have cals that flash the check engine light for knock

The factory electronics are the best electronic/sensory knock gauge. The human ear is the best method period at picking up knock.

If you retrofit another system it to be calibrated with real knock and your ear.

MSd makes a knock warning system, it goes off at the slightest sign of detonation/knock.

the knock sensor generates a small voltage when knock occurs

I'm sure there must be a way to flash an LED when that voltage is detected that will cost <276$ ... something like a Dawes Device monitor...

c'mon electronic geeks - get on this !

This guy sells a cheap knock warning light that we've often recommended to our customers if they want knock sensing:

Engine knock detection and indication for all vehicles
