ok, this has probably been asked a million times, but what do i have to do to put a 3 bar map sensor on my 1991 2.5 TI? Is it a hard swap, and where can you get them from. I heard that GM has a cheap 3bar, but does this hook up easily?
thanks in advance!

part number 16040749. Right from gm. I paid $117.24 for mine. I pretty much clicks right in except for a little tang inside that you need to trim off, you'll figure it out once you see it. It's a supper easy swap, but you need a custom computer calibration to handle it.

I have had my map unplugged for some time becuase it runs like crap with it plugged in. I even bought a brand new one from the dealer!!! **** expesive, and still doenst work! Does it wreck anything running without the map?

What did I say in my post about a calibration?
Your running your car without the map sensor hooked up??? Somethings messed up there. I wouldn't even consider mods until you get that fixed.

how do you propose i do that? I have no clue what is wrong with it. I will be running new vacume lines right away, mabey that will fix the problem. It will work most of the time when it is plugged in, and sometimes it wont idle, so i have to unplug it, and it runs great??!!
What exactly does the map do? Mabey i need a new computer?

On the '90/91 SBEC's, the computer will default to a limp mode when there is no MAP signal. It uses a table of MAP vs. throttle to estimate the MAP sensor voltage, but it is not intended to be a permanent substitute for the real MAP sensor voltage.

So, you bought a new MAP and it also didn't work? What makes you think a 3-bar is going to work? Sounds like you have a problem with the vacuum harness somewhere that needs to be addressed first.

The 3-bar does need a custom cal to make it work. Otherwise all of the fuel and ignition tables will be off.

My suggestion to you is simple. FIX the current problem first. If you can't fix this, the last thing you need is a 3 bar calibration. You'll blow up in no time flat. Might sound harsh. It was not intended to be.

hey, guys i really appreciate the advice. I really dont want to blow up my car! I ran without the map for soooooo long and never had a problem, and nobody told me otherwised. If i had know, i would have fixed this loooooong ago, mabey this helped contribute to my Headgasket failure?
So it must just be a problem in the vacum system, not the computer though, right? If i replace each and every vacume line might this fix the problem?
Where should i start and what could be wrong. I definatly dont want to blow it up when i get a s60 in her, which will be soon. It is apart right now, so i might as well fix it while i have it apart and do it right.
thanks again,

-mark
